NATIONAL CONVENTIONS
9th National
Convention: Naga City
The first delegates trickled in the morning flights to Naga City on April 24,
but the bulk arrived in the early evening, on a tourist coach hired by the Naga
clergy to fetch them from the CBCP compound in Intramuros (Manila). In his address
during the welcome dinner he tendered at his own residence for them, the Archbishop
of Nueva Caceres, Most. Rev. Leonardo Z. Legaspi, O.P., said that he was welcoming
the participants of the 9th National Convention of the CLSP with all the more-than-400-year
history of the Archdiocese, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary as an
archdiocese in September 2001.
One thing that the Naga Convention might be especially remembered for was the
elegant moderation with which everything was conducted-made possible precisely
by the maturity of the archdiocese, which therefore had the necessary ecclesiastical
facilities to host a convention without having to resort to more secular venues.
It was an edifying mix of comfortable but austere lodgings for the delegates
(at the Holy Rosary Seminary), richness of cult in the liturgy (both at the Holy
Rosary Seminary and in the Cathedral), generous but never excessive hospitality
in the fellowship dinners (in the Major and Minor Seminaries and at the Archbishop's
Residence), and very proper conference room for the lectures and meetings (at
the Ateneo de Naga).
The 9th National Convention continued the tradition of the recent years in terms
of a more substantial content. From the first day, the keynote address of Bishop
Leonardo Medroso centered the theme: "Canon Law at the Service of the People
of God". Archbishop Legazpi's lecture on "Revisiting the Plenary Council of the
Philippines II (PCP-II)" further narrowed down the field of consideration. Prof.
Luis Navarro of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome) delivered
three lectures, centering on the canonical dimension of movements and charisms.
It was again election year, and a fresh set of officers was voted for a 2-year
mandate.
